TECH
RABBIT R1 - Need to Know

Smartphones have dominated the world of mobile devices since Steve Jobs introduced the world to the iPhone in 2007. 4 years later Siri was introduced as the first virtual assistant the user could speak to and receive answers or make requests. While occasionally useful, virtual assistants have not reached their ultimate form of becoming your very own personal assistant, capable of handling everything on your behalf. Booking trips, making reservations, responding to messages and emails, etc. The LLM (Large Language Model) was made popular by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot that answers mostly any question with surprisingly high accuracy levels. Due to this, the intrigue around AI has grown substantially, and a race to profit is underway.
Scene established. Enter Rabbit R1. AI in a box. The Hardware is thoughtfully designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, meaning to elicit a toylike, retro aesthetic. You’ll find physical buttons to interact with, a small screen, and a camera that rotates 360°. Unlike smartphones, the design around the R1 or Humane’s AI pin is meant to steer you away from constant interaction and provide a more “Human” experience. Unfortunately in its current state, AI hardware is not more useful or efficient than a smartphone and is currently being sold on promises and limited functionality. These products are a tech enthusiast's dream but until the models they are built on have been trained extensively and the hardware meets the needs of the device, they are not a reliable smartphone replacement. It is easy to see the vision behind these products: simple devices that assist you in navigating life and offer the effectiveness of a real personal assistant. A reasonable vision that creates a smartphone alternative. For the sake of innovation, let's hope these devices improve quickly enough to justify their value as investments for consumers and enthusiasts.
